Crown & Mitre Hotel

Standing proud in the centre of Carlisle’s main shopping street, the Crown & Mitre Hotel is a fine example of intricate Edwardian architecture. Ornate stone carvings adorn the exterior, and inside you will find sweeping staircases, decorative plasterwork, and sash windows. The hotel is enviably located in the heart of Carlisle, overlooking a section of the pedestrianised centre where there are regular activities and events.

The hotel is just minutes from Carlisle’s impressive cathedral, and the ancient Carlisle castle is just 15-minutes away by foot. Furthermore, the hotel benefits from its own private car park, and further afield, Ullswater is approximately a 40-minute drive away. Former guests include President Woodrow Wilson in 1918, who stayed at the hotel as part of a state visit that included exploring his family links to the city of Carlisle.

Accommodation

The Crown & Mitre is one of the larger city centre hotels with 92 rooms in total. All rooms benefit from en-suite bathroom facilities, but it is worth noting that many of the rooms have a vanity unit with a sink in the main bedroom area, rather than in the en-suite bathroom. All rooms also include complimentary toiletries.

Standard single, double, twin, and family rooms are available, and in-room amenities include tea and coffee making facilities, heated towel rails, flat screen televisions with digital satellite channels, and free Wi-Fi. A number of rooms have been refurbished bringing them up to a superior standard and these benefit from additional amenities such as comfortable seating areas and bright, modern décor. A superior family room is available that includes a Playstation.

Restaurants & Bars

The stylish and art-deco inspired Peace and Plenty Restaurant is open daily from 10am to 2pm for brunch and lunch and 6.30pm to 9.30pm for evening meals. During the brunch and lunch service, guests can choose from a range of cooked breakfasts, sandwiches, wraps, jacket potatoes, burgers, or a small selection of classic main dishes. In the evenings, the restaurant serves a modern British menu and there is an extensive wine list available to accompany your meal.

For a more informal dining experience, guests can dine in the small bar that features comfortable leather seating and wood panelling. Food is served all day here and the menu includes brunch items, light bites, and more substantial main dishes.

For hotel residents, breakfast is served in the extravagant breakfast room, a double height room with Corinthian style columns and vast sweeping windows. A breakfast buffet includes an extensive selection of hot and cold breakfast items, but you can also request something cooked to order if required.

The hotel has a swimming pool and hot tub for the exclusive use of guests that has recently had a full refurbishment. The hotel has extensive conference and event facilities, including an impressive ball room that is ideal for large events such as wedding receptions.
