The Gables Guest House

Housed in a 17th century building in the centre of Ambleside, the Gables Guest House is a traditional B&B with 14 charming and comfortable rooms. The Gables offers a number of perks to guests, and is superbly located as a base for exploring the Lake District. Ambleside is a lively town brimming with independent shops and national outdoor gear chains, as well as a cinema, and numerous pubs, restaurants, and cafés.

The shore of Lake Windermere is a 20-minute walk from the guest house, where you will find the landing stages for the Windermere Lakes Cruises that can take you all around the lake and to the numerous attractions that surround it. Popular walking routes in the area include the Fairfield Horseshoe and Loughrigg Fell.

Accommodation

It’s clear from the wattle and daub exterior of the Gables Guest House that this is a very old building, yet inside you will find rooms fitted with modern amenities and furnishings. A mixture of single, twin, double, and family (with one double and one single bed) rooms are available, all fitted with en-suite bathrooms and some with baths.

There is one king room with a four-poster bed and a seating area that offers views of Loughrigg Fell. In-room amenities include complimentary toiletries, free Wi-Fi, flat screen television, and a hospitality tray that includes biscuits. For guests who prefer fresh milk with their tea and coffee, there is a small fridge in the dining room with milk that guests can help themselves to.

Restaurants & Bars

Breakfast is served each morning in the dining room between 8.30am and 9.30am. A selection of cereals, fruit juices, natural and flavoured yogurts, fresh fruit, and toasts with various spreads and preserves are available. In addition, guests can choose cooked items from a selection that includes bacon, Cumberland sausages, vegetarian sausages, eggs, beans, hash browns and more.

There is no restaurant or bar. However, the owners of the guest house also own Sheila’s Cottage, a small restaurant in the centre of Ambleside serving modern British cuisine throughout the day and evening. Guests of the Gables Guest House receive a 10% discount at Sheila’s.

Additional Facilities & Services

The Gables has secure cycle storage and a drying room for wet outdoor clothing and boots. Guests of the Gables can access Choices Health Club in Windermere for free. Here you will find a pool, sauna, Jacuzzi, steam room, and gym, as well as a Champagne bar.
