Wateredge Inn

Borrans Road, Ambleside, LA22 0EP
Wateredge Inn Outside

In the 17th century the building that is now known as the Wateredge Inn was a row of terraced fishermen cottages. However, as more and more visitors flocked to Ambleside seeking to trade and later simply to admire the views, the cottages were converted to an inn, with a substantial extension added. Today, many of the original period features of the inn have been retained, adding to its rustic charm. However, it’s the inn’s location that is perhaps the primary selling point. Wateredge well and truly lives up to its name, being located right on the shore of Windermere, with its own private jetty.

Sadly, that location has come at a cost, with the inn experiencing significant flooding in both 2009 and 2015. Both times the inn’s owners have strived to make a spectacular recovery with a full refurbishment of the ground floor. The inn is a ten-minute walk from the centre of Ambleside and a ten-minute drive from the centre of Bowness-on-Windermere. Attractions in the area include Wray Castle and the World of Beatrix Potter.

There are three categories of room at the Wateredge Inn. Standard “Lakeland” rooms are available with single, double, or twin beds and are the smallest rooms, so ideal for shorter breaks. These rooms have an en-suite bathroom with free Pure Lakes toiletries, a flat screen television, desk with chair, and a hospitality tray that includes bottled water. “Classic” rooms are larger, often with unique period features, and are available with as king, twin, or family sized rooms.

Classic rooms also have a seating area and views of the fells and lake. Across the hotel’s courtyard you will find the “Garden” superior rooms in a separate annex. These rooms are generously sized with a large seating area inside, and with patio doors leading either to a private balcony or garden patio with seating. All rooms are decorated in a traditional, elegant style and include free Wi-Fi.

Restaurants & Bars

The Wateredge Inn is a very large pub that is very popular with visiting tourists, and therefore there can be a short wait for a table. Food is served all day in the restaurant from 10am and the menus are extensive. The day time menu is packed with lighter bites and sandwiches, whilst in the evenings, there is a great choice of classic British and internationally inspired cuisine, with many dishes using locally sourced produce. There is a pizza menu with dough made on site, a children’s menu, and a gluten-free menu.

The bar overlooks the lake, with a large beer garden leading down to the shore. Inside, you will find comfortable armchairs and cosy fires. Guests can choose from one of five cask ales, or opt for one of the many wines, spirits, whiskies, and cocktails available. Regular live music events are held here.
