The Log House

If you want to stay somewhere different, quirky, and with a fascinating history on a modest budget, then take a look at the Log House. Located in Ambleside along the main road down to Lake Windermere, this unique building was originally imported all the way from Norway at the start of the 20th century. Landscape artist, Alfred Heaton Cooper, spent a number of years in Norway painting the fjords before relocating back to the UK and eventually the Lake District in a bid to make his fortune from his work. He brought the quirky red-roofed log cabin from Norway with him, first setting it up in Coniston as his studio, before later moving it to Ambleside in a shrewd recognition that this was where most of the tourist trade could be found.
Today, the Log House is primarily a popular restaurant serving British cuisine infused with Mediterranean inspiration, but in the apex of the building guest rooms have been created, providing an unusual base for a Lake District break. The Waterhead jetty for the Windermere Lakes Cruises is a 10-minute walk and boats from here will take you to numerous attractions and popular walking spots in the area, including Wray Castle, Brockhole and Claife Heights.

Accommodation
There are just three rooms at the Log House, and under 18s are not permitted to stay, making this accommodation perfect for a quirky yet romantic short break. The rooms are located in the apex of the building and therefore feature sloped ceilings with large windows that provide delightful views of the fells. There are two standard rooms with double beds and one superior room with the option of either twin singles or a king sized bed. Rooms are styled with simple décor and Scandinavian style furnishings. All rooms are fitted with an en-suite shower room, free toiletries, free Wi-Fi, a hospitality tray that include biscuits, television, fan, hairdryer, and a local information pack.

Restaurants & Bars
The ground floor of the Log House is devoted to a very popular and highly acclaimed restaurant. Using seasonal and locally sourced produce, the restaurant serves classic British cuisine with a Mediterranean flair. Steaks are particularly popular here, being cooked at your table on hot lava stones, with other dishes served in heated lava bowls, as well as burgers and pasta dishes. The restaurant’s bar has a great selection of wines, spirits, and cocktails. For guests, a full cooked breakfast is served each morning and is included in the room rate.
