Nanny Brow

Beautifully restored by the current owner, Nanny Brow is a luxurious B&B housed in an Arts and Crafts house that was designed by notable early twentieth century architect Francis Whitwell who was well established in the arts and crafts movement. Original ornate plasterwork and oak panelling can be found in many of the rooms and public areas and features animals and flowers, typical of the Arts and Crafts movement design.
The B&B is a five-minute drive from the centre of Ambleside, just off the A593 that runs from Ambleside to Coniston. Wray Castle is a ten-minute drive, though if you wanted to walk there for a day trip it would take around an hour. Other nearby attractions include the Windermere Lake Cruises and Beatrix Potter’s former home, Hill Top. Children under twelve are not permitted here, so this accommodation is best suited for couples seeking a relaxed and romantic break away.

Accommodation
Nanny Brow is presented as a high quality B&B with 14 individually styled rooms and suites that are fitted with a mixture of contemporary and antique furniture that complement that Arts and Crafts style of the building. All rooms feature modern en-suite bathrooms with powerful showers and complimentary toiletries, whilst in-room amenities include large flat screen televisions with digital channels, free Wi-Fi, cosy armchairs, a hospitality tray with homemade biscuits and cakes that are replenished daily, and little extras, such as a shoe shining kit and a sewing kit.
Along with standard and superior rooms, all of which are generously sized, Nanny Brow has a collection of suites for an extra special break. Junior Suites are very large with a comfortable seating area, with some offering private access to the B&B’s extensive gardens. There are two King Suites, one with a roll top bath and dual aspect windows, the other with its own private balcony and bed on a mezzanine level.
Restaurants & Bars
For overnight guests, breakfast is included in the room rate and served in the delightful dining room that has an original Shapland & Petter fireplace at its heart. The B&B sources almost of its food from within a 20-mile radius and the breakfast menu includes homemade muesli, porridge, and other cereals, fresh fruit salad, toast and pastries, and a full range of cooked options that include eggs from the local fell side.
There is a bar and guest lounge. This being a small B&B, the bar is not always guaranteed to be open but it does have a good selection of beers, wines, and spirits. The guest lounge also has a selection of board games for your entertainment. Packed lunches can be supplied if ordered in advance. There is no restaurant but Ambleside is a five-minute drive where you will find numerous choices for evening meals.
Additional Facilities & Services
Wet walking gear can be dried in the B&B’s cellar and laundry services are available if required. Additionally, the B&B has teamed up with a local walking guide and can arrange a guided walk for you, with additional charges applicable.
Small and intimate weddings can be held at Nanny Brow, with the option to have a civil ceremony in one of the delightful arts and crafts rooms. The hotel has agreements with various local businesses to source everything you need for your perfect day.
